Neil’s story

Neil and his family chose to apply for a personal health budget to give them greater choice and control over the care Neil received and the freedom to make personal choices around his routine and social activities.

Neil, 82, is cared for 24 hours a day in his own home by our care team after being paralysed in a road traffic accident 7 years ago. Neil enjoys motorbikes and watching the racing. He has spent many years renovating his home in Norfolk which has been adapted for his specific needs.

We became involved in Neil’s care at the start of 2019 as he wanted to change his current provider while his family were applying for a Personal Health Budget (PHB) – an agreed amount of money with which a person can plan and implement care and support for their own healthcare and wellbeing needs.

Creating a personalised package of care

We met with Neil and his sisters prior to taking over his package of care to understand what was not working well for him with his current care provision. We then began transferring his existing care staff and recruiting and training new care staff to Neil’s specific care needs.

Neil has a T6 spinal injury and has no movement from the chest down. He continues to have reduced respiratory function and requires frequent positional changes, chest physio, nebuliser therapy and both manual and mechanical cough assist. Due to his spinal injury, he is at risk of Autonomic Dysreflexia where there can be a sudden and potentially lethal rise in blood pressure, which his care team are specially trained to manage. Our care team also support Neil with all transfers, full bowel management regime and all his personal and oral care needs. He has seen improvements to his health with the recent removal of his tracheostomy.

This personal and enhanced package of care and support allows Neil the freedom to make personal choices around his routine and social activities.

Funding

Neil is partially funded by his local Continuing Healthcare Group (CHC) and is eligible for Clinical Commission Group (CCG) funding. He also has private funds that support some of his package of care.

Positive outcomes

Neil and his family chose person-centred healthcare to give them greater choice and control over the care that Neil was given. The approved Personal Health Budget allows Neil and his family to purchase the care through a care provider of their choice, which they can have full input into without the need to become an ‘employer’.

Our local care team fully coordinate Neil’s package of care which includes:

All care planning.
Recruitment and training of all care staff.
Rota co-ordination and management.
Nurse led support ensuring staff are fully competent in all clinical interventions.
Management of complaints and incidents.

Covid 19 Story

Neil unfortunately contracted COVID-19 in 2020 and was admitted to hospital. Our specialist care team continued to support him during his stay in hospital.

Karen, Neil’s daughter said:

“If he didn’t have his Apollo team at home to continue looking after him, delivering the same chest physio regime that was given in hospital, he would not have been able to get home so quickly. Thank you Apollo Home Healthcare, for your dedication, with a special mention to the ladies on the front line looking after Dad, who we think of as extended family.

We are so thankful to all the NHS staff who cared for Neil whilst he was in hospital and to our care team who all rallied round to make sure he had the care he needed on returning home.”
